Down the Mekong on a self-built raft

This site documents the preparation, the raft, the route, and the story behind a solo expedition down one of the world's great rivers. I'll share planning updates, gear decisions, maps, safety approach, and the mission behind the journey.

OVERVIEW

Last year, in September 2024, there were bad floods in Thai areas along the Mekong River. Last month, July 2025, the river level also breached the banks of the river, causing much grief in the affected communities. To raise funds for flood victims, I will be rafting down the mighty Mekong River on a bed made of repurposed driftwood washed up after last year's floods. That wasn't the original intention. Originally, I considered floating down the river on a tractor tyre tube, but, once the fog cleared from my tiny brain, I realized that that was a foolish venture. The new, improved plan is a wooden bed attached to barrels and a stabilizer made from bamboo. If you look at the SPONSORS tab, you will see that I don't need much in the way of sponsorship. I hope to have the sponsorship page up and running soon. The two biggest items are a waterproof camera and a couple of power banks. Also, if there are any kayakers out there who would like to accompany me as my 'safety team', please contact me on : This email address is being protected from spambots. The Thai people are incredibly friendly and accepting. Having had many enjoyable trips to Thailand, it is time to give back. Last year and this year have seen devastating flooding affecting many communities along the Mekong River. All help is much appreciated.

Raft on the Mekong

RAFT INFO

Design

The 'raft' is a 6ft by 4ft wooden 'bed' repurposed from driftwood washed up by last year's floods. To this, I will attach the following: 1. a rudder 2. a bamboo stabilizer 3. a bamboo flagpole. 4. a small bamboo mast with a 'handkerchief' sail. 5. a flotation device. I am going to add a rough sketch soon.

Gear

Whitewater PFD, helmet, throw bag, provisions, first aid, and repair kits. Navigation and comms on mobile device.

Safety

Risk assessment for rapids, dams, borders, and weather. Conservative decision-making with clear go/no-go criteria and planned bail-out points along the route.

MISSION

There are a few things that drive this expedition: environmental awareness, cultural storytelling, personal challenge and fundraising.

Raft on the Mekong

DURATION

I estimate that prep will take 4-5 days. The launch window is the whole of October which allows for contingency days. The raft will be abandoned wherever we end up. The stated goal is a point 500km from the start, so we might not make it all the way. We will try our best. I will consider water levels and monsoon transitions before launching. I think the trip will take 1 to 2 weeks depending on events and speed of river flow.
